Quyon – Jillian Young

This past Saturday evening, the Quyon Community Association hosted their second Trivia Night at the Quyon Community Centre. The evening was filled with challenging trivia questions, snacks and drinks, and lots of fun for all who participated. In the end, we weren’t able to hold on to the winners’ title, as we came in second to the Ken Jennings Quartet (Amy Taylor, Katie Taylor, Chris Keller, and Jenn Rusenstrom). Chris and the Youngsters salute them. The team that came in last chose their favourite local non-profit organization, and thus the Quyon Legion was gifted with $200. A big thanks to the QCA for putting on such a fun event in our community. We really enjoy these trivia nights.

On Sunday, the Quyon Legion held the annual Remembrance Day service at the cenotaph, with a good crowd out to mark the solemn occasion. Cal Cummings was the emcee for the event, with prayers led by Father Christian Kakule of St. Mary’s Parish and Patricia Power of the Quyon Pastoral Charge. Many wreaths were laid on behalf of local community groups, and in honour of loved ones who served bravely for our country. A light lunch was served afterwards at the Legion.

Condolences to the family of Roy Beattie, as he passed away on Nov. 1 at the age of 76. Thoughts are with his loved ones as they grieve.

Happy birthday to Louisa MacKechnie, as she celebrated her first birthday on Oct. 27. We also have birthday wishes going out to Louie Provost on Nov. 11, to Blake Harrison and Vicky Leach on the 12th, to Bill Hamilton on the 13th, and to Hannah Dowe on the 14th. Best wishes to everyone celebrating this week.

This past weekend was the last of the season for our local chipstand, Casse-Croute du Village. We will miss their delicious food over the winter, but look forward to seeing them open again in the spring. Enjoy your break.

This coming Saturday, Nov. 11, the Onslow Home & School Committee is hosting their annual Christmas Craft Sale at the Quyon Community Centre. I am looking forward to being there with my table of Watkins products. It is always a fantastic day, and a great way to get some of your Christmas shopping down while also supporting local. Hope to see many friendly faces there. Please note that we will pause at 11 a.m. for a moment of silence to honour Remembrance Day.

Waltham – Helen Perry

Waltham residents were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Christoper (Chris) Ryan. Chris taught and was a member of the forestry department at the Algonquin Water Front Campus in Pembroke for almost 30 years. He was the long-time coach of the Loggersports team. Chris had a quiet mannerism about him and he had an infectious smile. He will be sadly missed by many. Our heartfelt sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. Gone way too young, may you RIP Chris.

Warm birthday wishes are extended to Suzanne Gagnon, who is celebrating her birthday today Nov. 8. Enjoy your special day, Susie.

Gabriel Malette grandson of Huguette & Garry Malette is celebrating his 15th birthday on Nov. 12. We hope that you enjoy your special day, Gabriel.

On Sunday morning, a Remembrance Day celebration took place at our regular mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Larry Perry carried up our Canadian flag, we observed a moment of silence followed by In Flanders Fields which was read by Phil Perry. Then we sang our national anthem, O Canada.

Nov. 11 is Remembrance Day. Let us take a moment of silence to remember those, who unselfishly made the ultimate sacrifice and gave up their lives, so that we could live in a free country. War has once again emerged in our fragile world. And once again, human lives are being lost to the horrors of conflict. We can only pray that a desire for peace and healing become more important than conquest. “Lest We Forget”
