The auditorium at L’École secondaire Sieur-de-Coulonge (ESSC) was packed on Wednesday night for the school’s qualifying performances for annual province-wide talent show Secondaire en spectacle.
While there were plenty of dance numbers making up the bulk of the performances, there were also several musicians on the schedule as well as a comedian, all hoping to be selected to continue on to the regional competition, which will take place on Mar. 31 at the Maison du Citoyen.
School leisure technician Jérémy Labine, who organized the event along with teacher Natacha Corriveau, said that the performances that evening were very student-driven.
“It’s really performances by the youth, it’s not us who does the choreography, or tells them whether to do one song or another,” he explained, noting they began preparations around Christmas time. “We give them time to work on it but it’s up to them to do their own practice, their own preparation.”
Local judges for the evening were Marie Gionet, Danelle Bourque and Erin Davis, as well as a representative of Secondaire en spectacle.
The two performances selected to represent the school at regionals were the country music performance Les haricots sont pas salés by Raphaël Fleury, Ulysse Riopel, Mavrick Vaillancourt-Lavigne, Donavan Dubeau, Riley Dumouchel and Adam Romain, as well as a dance number, Rien ne peut m’arrêter performed by Ève Labonté and Olivia Draper. The coup de coeur award was won by Élizabeth Lepack.
Other awards were as follows: Journalist – Florence Bergeron, Organizer – Phoénix Bérubé, Hosts – Étienne Bouchard et Juliette Boisvert Émond, Technician – Marc-Antoine Denault, Master of Ceremonies – Jade Danis Labelle.
