A garage fire on Queen Street in Shawville got a quick response from the Shawville-Clarendon Fire Department on Monday, as it was just down the street from the fire hall.
Chief Lee Laframboise said that they got the call about 11 a.m. and responded with 12 firefighters and three trucks.
“So how the call came in was, the old lad tried to call 9-1-1 but his phone didn’t work, I think the wires had already melted,” Laframboise said. “So he drove to the fire hall and I was there. So as soon as he said ‘My garage is on fire’ I grabbed the mic and the radio.”
The garage, located at the end of the street, was fully involved when they arrived and Laframboise said they were on scene for most of the afternoon fighting the blaze.
He said that while the building was a total loss, they were able to protect the house that sat close by and added that the owner would be able to salvage some of the contents of the garage.
“Well, it’s a loss, but he’ll save a lot of stuff for sure,” he said.
Laframboise said that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
