A beloved Shawville councillor and devoted community member has passed away.
Councillor Margaret “Peg” Sheppard, known for her dedication to not only the town but more specifically its residents, passed unexpectedly on March 14.
“She was a great sister and one of the best,” said Patti Armitage, one of Sheppard’s sisters.
“She made me who I am,” said Ali Margaret Lewis, Sheppard’s daughter. “I owe her everything.”
Armitage, a resident of Richmond, Ont., said the outpouring from the Shawville community to her and their other sister, Ruth Barber, has been tremendous and wonderful.
Lewis said that the community has been generous with their condolences and the town’s response was overwhelming.

Shawville Mayor Sandra Murray said that Sheppard will be missed greatly not only on council, but around town for her friendliness and devotion.
“She will be sorely missed in Shawville,” said Murray. “It was quite a shock to all of us.”
The mayor said she will be remembered for her work with the library, fire department and many special events. As well, she was heavily involved with the Senior Centre, which was said to be one of Sheppard’s top priorities.
“She loved that and looked after that for the council,” said Murray.
Sheppard has served on council since 2013, and was re-elected for her second term in November 2017.
Sheppard is survived by her daughter and sisters Armitage and Barber, plus many extended family members.
The service has been arranged through W.J. Hayes & Sons Funeral Home. Donations are asked to be made to the Pontiac Community Hospital Foundation or the Shawville Senior Centre.
Shawville Director-General Crystal Webb said that a byelection will be held to fill the seat on council, with a date to be determined.
