The first game of the playoffs started at home and the Lions came out ready to roll. They were taking on the last place Loups Collines but in the playoffs, anything can happen.
Halfway through the first period Jeffery Demers cracked the code and started the scoring for the Lions with a nice set up from Mavrik Maxsom. Not long after, the Loups clawed back and tied the game. Before the game, Coach Danny Lalonde had instructed his troops to fire everything at the net.
Shortly before the period ended, Mason Vereyken passed it back to the point where Easton Armstrong’s shot hit a Loup stick on the way in and bulged the twine.
Early in the second, Les Loups tied things up at 2-2 before Vereyken banged in the game winner after Demers won a nice puck battle in the corner to get the puck out front. From there it was a back and forth affair with both goalies making some nice saves to keep the game close.
However, in the last three minutes of the third period, the Lions poured on the coal and buried the Loups.
First, Jeffrey Demers scored a beauty from Ashton Deschens. Right after, hound dog Noah McCormick’s tenacity paid off as he broke in alone and slipped one past the goalie. The applause had barely died down when Demers completed his hat trick set up by the Bristol pistol Riley Drummond to down the Loups team 6-2.
After winning Saturday, the Lions took on the Aylmer Riverains on Sunday to see who would head on to the semi-finals. Things started well for the Lions when Jeffery Demers pounced on a loose puck in the netural zone and fired on home to put the home team up 1-0. Minutes later, however the Riverains busted loose to tie it up 1-1.
Near the end of the first, Easton Armstrong floated a pass over to Ashton Deschense who made no mistake firing a bullet past the Aymer goalie to put the Lions up 2-1.
Midway through the second period Aylmer tied things up to set up a thrilling third. Halfway through the final frame the Riverains took their first lead of the game 3-2 on a breakaway. With 45 seconds left the Lions pulled their goalie and threw out six skaters determined to tie the game in front of their home crowd. Despite gaining possession in the Aylmer zone, the Riverains held back the pressing Lions and earned the victory.
Even though their season is over, the Lions should hold their heads high after an 11-2-1 record in the west division. Congratulations on a great year of learning, working hard, making new friends and putting smiles on the faces of all parents. We are proud of you!
