R.S. Ranch got a running start on the season, kicking off with their rodeo last weekend.
Seeing roughly 30 riders competing, guests had the chance to show off their skills in three styles of events at the Mansfield et Pontefract ranch across two days of riding.
Ranch owner and event organizer Suzie Carrier said that this was the fourth rodeo she’s hosted, and that they do it once a year because it takes quite a bit of work – starting in January – to make sure it runs smoothly.
Events began with the performance classes, starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday. In this event, participants would strut their stuff in showing off what their horse is capable of.
This first class saw nine challenges, starting with the halter class and including horsemanship, Western pleasure, musical stall, command and more.
The Gymkhana challenges started a little later than expected, seeing horses take to the track shortly after 2 p.m. Events included flag races, barrel races, keyhole, relay races and much more, all across youth and adult divisions.
Met with some on and off rain showers, riders maneuvered their steeds through tricky challenges, based around speed and control.
Carrier admitted that the rain was beneficial to the competition, as the dust in the ring would be better controlled and packed down by the water.
Sunday’s events consisted of the favourite cowboy challenges, across two age divisions. The novice classes started up the day at 9 a.m., and the youth class took over at 1 p.m. The intermediate class followed all of that in the afternoon.
Rounding out the fun at the rodeo was a petting zoo and pony rides, as well as shopping and food options. Saturday was also scheduled to host a lumberjack competition during the day, and the musical stylings of Paul Fortin in the evening.
Next up for the R.S. Ranch is their long ride and sleepover cottage adventure on June 15. Participants will travel to a cottage in Otter Lake, enjoying hours of riding over three days, plus lots of musical fun.
