Quyon Sports and Recreation hosted a winter carnival for the community on Saturday at the Quyon outdoor arena and the town’s library.

On hand were various association members and volunteers who provided a broad array of activities including skating, hockey, sledding, carnival games and crafts.

Bonnie Fraser Dowe was in charge of doling out hot beverages and hotdogs, while Matt Curley helmed the BBQ and offered maple taffy, a most classic of Quebec traditions. Donna Hickey liaised with the community, ensuring there were picnic tables, trash bins, a mountain of snow for sledding and a clean lot for parking. Hickey’s husband, Shawn Findlay, known as the “everything guy”, took care of many of the big pieces like facility access, snow-clearing on the rink and safety markers.

Balancing the outdoor activities with something for those who prefer to be inside, local artist Glenda Nitschke offered crafting at the town library across the road from the rink.

For their part, Stephanie Shoobert and Curtis Daley played carnival directors on the day ensuring everyone had direction, information and everything they needed for some good old winter fun.

With hotdogs gone by early afternoon and beverage stations, with hot chocolate donated by Gavans Hotel, dry shortly thereafter, there was reason to smile for what the organizing team hopes becomes a local tradition.
