An annual bonspiel running over 40 years returned to the Shawville Curling Club on Saturday, where 16 teams competed all day long for the top spot.
It was the 42nd edition of the Quyon Lions’ Bonspiel, and even after all this time participants are eager to don their sliders and stretch their sweeping arms in anticipation of taking home the trophy.
“This is a fundraiser every year for the Lions,” said event organizer Glen Leach.
Helping support the Quyon Lions’ various charitable donations, 16 teams competed from 9 a.m. until seven in the evening for their shot at first place.
While teams mostly come from the Quyon area, Leach said they still see a few Shawville teams and participants become a part of the action.
“It’s a fun community event, lots of players look forward to it every year,” said Leach.
Leach has been helping organize the bonspiel for six years now, stepping up amongst his Thursday night crew at the club in order to do his part to give back.
“I curl here Wednesday nights competitively and we have our Thursday night Quyon League,” continued Leach.
At this point, the organization for the bonspiel has become fairly straightforward. He starts putting the word out a couple of weeks prior to the day and sure enough, he soon has plenty of teams to fill the schedule.
This year’s winners were Debbie Smith, lead, Mary Ann Abrams, second, Darleen Murphy, third, and Phyllis Wilson, skip, who added their team to the long list of winners on the bonspiel’s trophy.
