On Friday evening, I joined a group of friends at Gavan’s Hotel to hear Jessica Pearson perform in the Pub. I have become a big fan of her group, Jessica Pearson and the East Wind, but it was so much fun to hear her play alone acoustically. The music was amazing, and we had a fantastic night.

This past Saturday, the Egan Mill hosted a contest for local bakers, to see who could make the best bread using 100 per cent Mill flour. Folks were invited to come down to taste-test and vote on who made the best bread. The winner was Cathy Dolan, as her bread received the most votes and she was awarded $500. They also held a corn roast for guests to enjoy.

Happy 75th birthday to Denis Renaud on Aug. 29. He celebrated with family and friends at a party at the Quyon Legion on Saturday, Aug. 23. Wishing Denis all the best on this milestone occasion.

Birthday wishes are going out to Hannah Lang on Aug. 28. Happy 1st birthday to Caleb Draper, as he celebrates on the 29th. Happy birthday also to Isla Harris on the 30th, to Georgia Fleck, Olivia Gravelle, and Leslie Stanton on the 31st, to Atlas and Nixon Davis, Stacy Johnston, and Reese MacKechnie all on Sept. 1, and to Therese Demell on the 2nd. Blessings to everyone celebrating special occasions this week.

The Quyon Community Association is hard at work preparing for Community Day, which is coming up on Sept. 6. They are looking forward to a big celebration this year as Quyon marks its Sesquicentennial year. The festivities start at noon and will feature a full slate of entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening. The musical talent on-stage for the day includes Chicken Fried, Lorne Brady & friends, Barry Teevens & friends, Amber Prud’homme, Gail Gavan, and more. There will be children’s activities in the park, and a delicious roast beef dinner served by the Quyon Lions Club. Special for the 150th anniversary will be demonstrations by the Great Canadian Lumberjacks, with shows planned for noon, 3 p.m., and 7 p.m., as well as a return of the Capital City Drone Show, which we were first treated to on Canada Day. On the same weekend, Quyon Sports and Rec will be hosting their annual 3-pitch tournament, which only adds to the fun. Quyon will definitely be the place to be on Sept. 6.

It is hard to believe Shawville Fair weekend is upon us again. That means it is also back-to-school time. The summer always seems to fly by so fast. Wishing all of the students, teachers, and staff a wonderful year as they return to the classrooms this week. I also hope everyone has a terrific weekend at the Fair. It is such a big event every year, and we are all looking forward to it.
