It was with shock and sadness we learned of the sudden passing of Derek Lepine on July 23. For the gang at Mountainview Turf, Derek was a much loved and valued team member. His loss will be deeply felt, especially within the sod crew, of which he was such an important part. All of our love and support is going out to his fiancée Amanda Foran and his children, and all of Derek’s loved ones. We will always remember him.
A thunderstorm ripped through the area on Thursday evening, leaving many in the Pontiac and beyond without power for up to several days in some cases, and damage from fallen trees in places as well. It was especially difficult with such hot, humid weather. I hope everyone made it through it. I know I struggle to keep my spirits up during a long power outage, and I was so thankful to get my power back late Saturday morning.
On Friday evening, I headed to Shawville for a fun summer evening at the drive-in Bingo in support of the Pontiac Arena Fund. We had a great evening trying our luck, and we even got a chance to celebrate when my nephew Caden got to call “Bingo” on one of the games. Big thanks to the PAF for organizing the event, we all enjoyed it.
For boaters in the area, Saturday was a big day as the annual “Giver on the River” was held at Mohr Island. They had beautiful weather and a huge crowd came out to enjoy the fun. I hope everyone had a fantastic time.
Congratulations to the Quyon Flyers U-11 team that won at the Kinburn tournament this past weekend, and to the U-13 team that were finalists. Way to go!
Birthday wishes are going out to Mary-Sheila Keon on July 30, and to Briggs Richardson and Audrey Fraser on the 31st. Happy birthday to Chum Cote on Aug. 2, to Kendall Young on the 3rd, and to Brodee Campbell on the 4th. Best wishes to everyone celebrating this week.
Don’t forget that Quyon Pastoral Charge will be hosting “Blooms, Buildings, and Blocks: A Church Fundraiser Tour” on Sat., Aug. 9 to celebrate Quyon’s 150th Anniversary, as well as the United Church of Canada’s 100th Anniversary. The tour will feature the gardens of Elwyn Lang and Heather Barr and Eric and Katharine Fletcher, along with historical sites The Egan Mill and The Mohr House, as well as a quilt show and dessert served at Quyon United Church. Tickets are now available, with several church members having them to sell or by contacting Elizabeth Young at 819-458-2677. This event will be held rain or shine, and we look forward to seeing folks out for a great day.
