Deepest sympathy is extended to my Quyon social notes writer predecessor Jill McBane and her family, as her father Rolly MacDougall passed away on May 22. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all as you grieve this loss.

Congratulations to Katie (Beer) and Chris O’Brien, as they welcomed their first child on May 24. They have a beautiful baby girl named Audrey Mae. Wishing Katie and Chris all the best with their sweet wee girl.

Despite less than favourable weather, the Quyon spirit prevailed over the past week as our community was busy with several events on. Last Thursday evening, Onslow School was buzzing with activity as they held their Spring Fair. The Quyon Lions Club were set up to run the barbeque, while Shawville 4-H were also there with some animals for the children to enjoy seeing up-close. There were games, face painting, information booths, a dunk bucket, cake walk, and so much more. Everyone had a fantastic time and it was a wonderful success. Kudos to the Onslow Home & School Committee and the staff for putting on such a fun night.
On Saturday, the Quyon Legion was the place to be as they held a BBQ bash to celebrate Quyon’s 150th Anniversary. The Legion was packed with many out to enjoy the music, which included Reg & Shag in the afternoon and Chicken Fried in the evening. They also served up a delicious Chicken & Rib dinner, which was prepared by Smokin Boys & Hot Grills. The food and atmosphere were terrific, and it was a wonderful celebration. A big thank you to the Legion for all their hard work in hosting this event.

The Moulin Egan Mill has been gradually preparing to open, which everyone is anxiously anticipating. On Saturday, they surprised the community by opening their ice cream stand for the day, and offering up $2 cones as they practice to get ready for the season. It was a huge hit, with so many coming out to try out the ice cream. My first cone was delicious! Wishing them all the best, not only with the ice cream stand, but with the Mill as well. We can’t wait to have this business open in our community.

Birthday wishes are going out to Rebecca Nugent on June 4, and to Carl Demell on the 7th. I’d also like to wish my cousin Brody Platt a happy 10th birthday on June 8. Happy days to all who are marking special occasions this week.

I’d like to give a special shout-out to my niece, Danica Provost, as she and her friend Siera brought home gold for D’Arcy McGee High School last weekend in their group at RSEQ Outaouais 2 vs 2 beach volleyball tournament. Way to go Danica and Siera!

The United Church of Canada is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and at Quyon and Wesley United Churches, we have opted to have our own celebration service on June 15. The service will be at Wesley United Church in Beechgrove at 10:30 a.m., and all are welcome to join us for a morning of celebrating 100 years being part of the United Church of Canada. We will be singing favourite hymns, enjoying a slideshow of memories from our particular chapter of the United Church history book, and celebrating with cake and coffee after the service. Please join us as we celebrate 100 years of the United Church of Canada.
