The Quyon Flyers were due to play one of their final home games in Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL) regular-season play against West Carleton Electric in Shawville on Thursday evening, but the start of the game was delayed due to the storm that ripped its way through the county.
Both teams fled the dugouts for dryer land under the lone shelter at the Shawville RA field, waiting out the storm while it tore through town, causing havoc on the ballfield and RA grounds. Trees were uprooted, the ballfield lights flickered before finally going out, and several players found themselves temporarily without headwear after the wind whipped their caps away.
Once the storm settled, players were determined to get a full game in before nightfall. The only challenge? The field was swamped, so they got to work emptying the diamond of rainwater.
Some players dug troughs in the sand to let the water stream out, while others used paint buckets to scoop the water away.
After more than a bit of elbow grease the game went ahead, but without any lights since the storm had killed power to the field.
After a scoreless first inning, a second-inning crack shot by Jared Murray brought home two runs for the Flyers. This proved the winning swing, since West Carleton Electric only managed a single run in the game.
Teams only played three innings before darkness set in and the officials called the game off. The final score was 3-1.
