Teams came out en masse for the first annual Quyon car rally organized by the Quyon Lions this Saturday, that sent teams zooming across the Pontiac in search of clues.
The car rally had previously been organized by the Quyon Lionettes for many years, but since the organization folded last year the Quyon Lions took on the event.
Former Lionette and current Lion Hollie Leach said the amount of teams entered this year was about the same as it has been in the past, with about 160 participants.
Teams started the day at the Quyon Community Centre to pick up their clues, and then drove around the Pontiac on a quest for answers. The team at the end of the day with the most correct answers takes home the team prize of $200. This year, the winning team included Elizabeth Young, Kara Young, Caden Provost and Rory Piper.
As is tradition, last year’s winners got the unenviable but crucial task of planning a route and choosing the theme and for this year’s car rally – which was “Quyon’s 150th anniversary” in honour of the milestone anniversary.
“We did a combination of trivia about the number 150 and about things that happened 150 years ago, with some trivia about the town itself,” said defending champion and organizer Karen Cull.
Leach said it was fun to see how the theme played out and how different teams dressed up for the occasion, some choosing more traditional costumes such as lumberjack outfits, to more creative ideas such as this year’s winners – a team dressed up as Quyon icons from the past.
“With some of the costumes, people take it in all sorts of different ways. Just because you say it’s Quyon’s 150th birthday, it’s amazing to see the different ways that people think that celebrating 150 is,” she said.
After the lasagna and caesar salad dinner held at the end of the day, the top three teams from the car rally were announced, followed by the best dressed and the 50/50 draw winner.
She said the suspense in the room is always heavy as teams wait to see who gets the extra task of organizing the event the next year.
“Everybody wants to come second,” she said. “It’s really fun at the end of the night when they call the first three teams, and they go ‘Oh, which one is it gonna be?’” she said.
