The Portage-du-Fort ball field and surrounding outbuildings are in the midst of a significant makeover.

For weeks now, a dedicated group of volunteers has been gathering on weekends, and even some throughout the week, to breathe new life into the facilities, which while once a hub for community, have been largely unused in recent years.

This cleanup effort is being led by the town’s recreation association, which is gearing up to host a summer festival on July 17-18.

Portage-du-Fort native Robbie McCallum has been the RA’s president since November of last year. He said he started doing some basic maintenance on the RA grounds, mostly just mowing the grass, as soon as he moved back to town from out west four years ago.

“It really was idle for many years, and it wasn’t until I moved back home with my kids that I wanted to get involved,” he said. Since McCallum took over as president, the RA has put on a small Santa Claus parade and built a skating rink down by the river.

“Our festival coming up is the first festival we’ve had in the four years that I’ve been back.”

He said thanks to a growing volunteer base, some serious progress has been made on cleaning up the ballfield in the last two months. On June 20, the RA hosted a work bee where 15 volunteers showed up.

“I’m a plumber by trade. I redid all the plumbing in the bathrooms so they’re all up and 100 per cent. We redid the flooring. My mom came in with some of my aunts and they went through the canteen and cleaned that,” McCallum said. “Since June 20, we’ve had a small group of volunteers here every weekend. It’s been phenomenal.”

Les and Sharon Brinkworth have been among the most dedicated of volunteers working to revive the RA. Les, originally from Portage, moved back home with his wife Sharon after working in Alberta for many years.

“It used to be an active ballfield with tournaments frequently,” Les said, recalling in particular the big parties and ball tournaments the town hosted for its 125th and 150th anniversaries.

“Anything that we can do to bring that community spirit, let kids have fun . . . I know when I was younger I loved to go to every tournament and play every ball tournament we could get our names into. It’s a way of life around here, ball tournaments. And for us it’s about giving back.”

This weekend’s festival will kick off on Friday with a warm-up ball game that will see kids face off against parents, followed by the first ball game of the weekend’s tournament, and an open mic hosted by Robbie himself. Saturday will offer a dunk tank, face painting and games for kids, more ball games, and likely some live music.

“It feels great,” said McCallum of getting the ball field up and running again.

“That’s what I remember when I grew up as a kid. There was constant ball tournaments in town. Almost every other weekend there was something going on at the ball field, and there was always a rink. It feels good to get back involved again and see if we can get some entertainment back in little old Portage.”
