The Shawville-Clarendon Fire Department held their second annual three-pitch baseball tournament last weekend, in support of purchasing the crew an air-filling machine for their equipment.
Running all weekend long and hosting 12 teams of ten players, ball players from all over brought out the big guns to take home the top spot.

Teams were split into two divisions for the tournament, ‘A’ and ‘bB, and many featured creative names, such as “Sons of Pitches” and the “Alcobolics.” The Saturday evening even played host to a homerun derby at five.
At the end of the tournament, after three days of playing ball – and partying with a live DJ on the Saturday night – the final ‘A’ and ‘B’ division games occurred.
In the ‘B’ division, a hard-fought final game between Balls Deep and Sons of Pitches came down to the latter emerging victorious.
The ‘A’ finals game, though disrupted by a refreshing rainfall halfway through, saw Overrated play against the Fine Chums. In the end, Overrated took the title home.
The SCFD hosted this tournament in order to continue their fundraising efforts towards purchasing an air-filling machine for the crew. This machine allows the men to refresh the air in the tanks at their station, rather than going elsewhere and spending a lot more money to get them filled all the time.
Fire Chief Lee Laframboise said that the crew is filling a couple hundred of the tanks every year, costing the department ten dollars a pop. Though the machine could cost as much as $60,000, they’ve already raised half of that through various fundraisers.
The tournament was organized by a few of the firefighters and their wives, and supported by local businesses such as Cartrites Restaurant, Hursty’s Bar and Grill, Vaughan Bastien Tire Services and Ian Peck Trucking, as well as the Shawville Recreation Association.
