When it comes to the morning sports announcements at Pontiac High School (PHS), teachers Brenda Davis and Phil Sweezy try and give the schools sports highlights an injection of levity in the same vein as TSN`s Jay Onrait and Dan O`Toole.
Which is why the students were so surprised to get a personalized message from the sportscasting duo themselves during the pep rally ahead of the upcoming Pontiac Cup volleyball tournament.
“Hello Pontiac High School,” bellowed O’Toole.
“Get louder,” Onrait chimed in to the glee of the students in the gymnasium.
“The Pontiac Panthers have to win the Pontiac Cup,” O’Toole said to a round of applause and screams.
The two TSN stars then led the students in a chant of “Let’s go Panthers!”
“Best of luck, we know you guys will kick butt,” O’Toole said.
The video clip was organized by Davis whose cousin is a clip editor for TSN. She sent a message to her cousin, who was in a meeting with The Jay and Dan Show’s mysterious Producer Tim at the time.
Within five hours, Davis had a video message from Canada’s favourite morning sports hosts.
“The kids were more shocked than excited,” Davis said. “This is a big deal for a community our size.”
In response, the students climbed on each other’s shoulders and burst out in chants of “P-H-S. P-H-S,” for a video that will be sent back to Onrait and O’Toole.
The pep rally was meant to get students excited for the upcoming Pontiac Cup volleyball tournament which will be hosted by PHS.
The event featured three videos. The first was a highlight package of this year’s boys and girls teams in action. The second was a clip of Davis and Sweezey doing their best Jay and Dan impersonations. Those two were followed by the video of Onrait and O’Toole.
Each player was introduced to a thundering round of applause.
The Panthers will be looking to repeat as champions after both the boys and girls teams won last year’s edition, which was hosted by École secondaire Sieur-de-Coulonge (ESSC).
This year’s tournament will see PHS, ESSC and Dr. Wilbur Keon School face off for one of the most coveted athletic titles in the Pontiac.
The tournament took place on Nov. 21, see next week’s edition of The Equity for all the details.
