The RA grounds in Otter Lake were busy over the weekend as the municipality’s 150th anniversary committee hosted its winter carnival, in spite of the rainy weather.
The weekend kicked off on Friday night with a talent show that packed the Raymond Johnston Community Centre, and was won by Katrina Soroka, with Sahara Ladouceur taking the top prize for youth and Stephanie Kluke winning the crowd favourite. Otter Lake mayor Jennifer Quaile even got a performance in.
The following day, though the grounds outside were sloppy with melting snow, the games continued inside, with a mini Olympics for children in the morning followed by “minute-to-win-it” challenges for everyone in the afternoon.
Committee member Sarah Gravelle explained that Otter Lake had a community carnival in the past and the committee decided to bring the tradition back for the town’s 150th anniversary.
“It was always something very popular,” she said. “Last night we started with our talent show, that was a tradition that we brought back. It was highly requested and we had a great turnout, it was amazing.”
The town council had a grudge match ball hockey game scheduled against the council from neighbouring Alleyn-et-Cawood, which was unfortunately cancelled due to the poor outdoor conditions.
“Tomorrow, unfortunately we have no more ice on our rink, so our ball hockey tournament was cancelled, but it’s ok, we have enough going on that I think we’re keeping people engaged and having a good time,” Gravelle said.
She added that the 150 committee has a host of events planned for later in the year.
Carnival events wrapped up on Saturday night with a performance by the Midnight Ramblers.
