The chip stand by Highway 148 in Campbell’s Bay is under new ownership this year. Dwayne Mosley, a resident of Mansfield, has been running the chip stand since early May with his wife, kids and grandkids under the name Boo-Boo’s Snack Shack. The name is an homage to Mosley’s granddaughter Brooklyn Lafleur, whom the family nicknamed Boo-Boo when she was very young.

“I’ve been hearing that people like the name,” he said.

Mosley said he has always wanted to get into the chip stand business and opened Boo-Boo’s this year to give his grandkids a summer job while making a bit of money himself.

He said he wanted to give an opportunity to granddaughter Kasey Lafleur, a Shawville 4-H club member who aspires to compete in a national competition in Toronto this year, to raise money for the trip.

“She has a very expensive taste, like $10,000 for a cow,” he said. “So she needs to make some money.”

To this end, each of Mosley’s three grandkids chose a dish on the menu to bear their name and pay for their extracurriculars. Portions of the proceeds from Kasey’s mac burger will help fund her Toronto trip, while grandson Hunter’s taco-in-a-bag will help pay for his sports.

Boo-Boo, also in 4-H, chose a cookie dough milkshake, and tops each one off with a special swirl before handing it off to the customer. “It’s my favourite,” she said of why she chose the flavour.

Kasey, who had never cooked before working in the Boo Boo’s kitchen, said it was a steep learning curve churning out ticket after ticket during busy mealtimes.

“It’s been busy, but you’ve kinda got to go with every order,” she said.
Mosley said he was proud of how Kasey and the whole team has done so far.

“It can be hectic in here, and you’d think she’s been doing it for five or ten years,” he said.

He said it was important for him to support the community by donating to local fire departments and buying local products as much as he can, such as beef from Bower Freshmart. The restaurant is also offering a 10 per cent discount for first responders, as well as a discount for seniors.

“It’s not only for me, it’s for the family, and everybody is going to benefit by it.”
