Anglers took to the river in Fort Coulonge on Saturday, competing in a brand-new tournament in support of Centraide Outaouais.
Kicking off what hopes to become an annual event, Lucien Graveline partnered with Patro to host the tournament at Canal Patro.
“It’s the first time, Lucien wanted to put it on to help people,” said Suzanne Daze, from the Patro.
It was a quick process from the decision to hold the tournament to the actual day, with Graveline committing to the idea a month before and then organizing that took place.
Despite this, there was still a good turnout. The tournament saw 15 people registered in the morning and more were expected to join the group as they were seen out fishing on the river, too.
Pickings out on the ice were fairly slim, according to some competitors. Nathalie Godin brought in a pike measuring close to a foot long and weighing just half a pound.
“It’s a good-looking fish, I was just about to pack up,” said Godin, who caught the fish around the middle of the afternoon.
Graveline organized nearly 30 prizes for participants, donated from many local businesses.
There were prizes for both the biggest and smallest catch of the day, with many leftover as participation prizes.
Joining those fishing were skaters out on the ice, which was a great sight for staff from the Patro at the river.
“The weather was perfect, people were skating,” said Daze.
“It was nice to see children out, too,” added Godin.
Centraide Outaouais is a charity looking to assist the less fortunate and encourage social development through a variety of different campaigns.
