Walking down a country road, I spied a white rock in the shape of a heart. It was the size of my smallest fingernail. I brought it home. The other day, on another path, there amongst the stones, was another tiny white rock in the shape of a baby chick. I guess I’ve started a collection. I find rocks fascinating.
Interestingly, not just stones can resemble other objects; we can encounter people though totally unrelated who look alike. I’ve been mistaken for another person and I’ve met people I was sure I knew, who were strangers! Strange! And then, there are people who appear by their words to be one thing, yet they turn out to be something else.
In certain settings it is easy to believe that what you see and hear is true. For instance, the first time you go to the doctor’s office and a man in a white coat enters the room you feel quite confident he is a doctor. That is confirmed not just by the stethoscope around his neck. His knowledge and advice help.
In every walk of life, but especially, if we say we are following God, what we say must match what we do. If it doesn’t, if we say one thing and do another, we end up like my tiny white rocks, a pretend, lifeless, lookalike.
