Current Municipality of Pontiac Mayor Roger Larose will be taking a run at a second term in the upcoming municipal elections.
Larose, who is just finishing his first term as mayor, said he is hopeful that residents will give him a chance to carry on with the work he has started.
Larose pointed to the new Quyon Community Centre project and the road improvements that are going on in the municipality as examples of the work the municipality has done while he has been at the helm.
He also pointed to the Quyon Recreation Park as a project that needs attention.
“We’ve got a lot to do there,” Larose said. “The park is not safe for kids. I think that’s one of the priorities to bring young families here – we need a decent park.”
When looking back on his first term, Larose pointed to the heavy lifting that needed to be done in the first year or so as the toughest challenge.
“We lost almost three years by the time we found qualified people,” he said. “It took us a while to get organized but we’ve made lots of changes to the municipality since then.”
Larose also said many files at the municipality were left to languish, which made his job difficult in the early stages of his first term.
“A good example is the [community] centre in Quyon,” Larose said. “It would have cost more to repair than to build a new one. Same thing when you go to the town hall: the roofs need to be done.”
He also pointed to the condition of the roads as an example of the municipality being slow to react to problems.
“The roads were let go,” he said. “When you get to the point where you have ten inch trees in the middle of the ditch, you can tell you let your road go for years.”
He pointed to an increased effort to communicate with citizens as one of the most significant improvements the municipality has made.
“Now we give them a lot more information,” he said. “We’ve got a bulletin that comes out every month instead of every three months, we’ve got a Facebook page and we did lots of surveys.”
Larose said that the increased consultation with taxpayers allowed the municipality to better pinpoint areas of need.
Larose said that after getting the municipality better organized, the plan is to stay ahead of any issues that emerge.
“We have to be proactive,” he said.
