The Ladysmith Recreation Association hosted a barbecue and collection of kids games under the hot mid-afternoon sun on Saturday, in an effort to bring together the community’s young’uns while celebrating Thorne’s newly re-instated fire department.

“We just wanted to do a summer fun day. It was something for the kids to come do, and just to get everybody out together,” said the association’s president Terri-Lyn Blaskie between flipping burgers behind Thorne’s town hall.

“And then we thought we would collab just to get everybody out to support our new fire chief and the Thorne fire department.”

Several of Thorne’s seven firefighters, including the department’s new chief Lee Laframboise, were on hand for a couple hours in the morning to help host the event.

But it was not long before a fire call for the first of four wildfires to ignite on Pontiac territory over the weekend saw them all hop in their trucks and race off down the road, sirens wailing.

The fun and games did not stop in Thorne though. The kids in attendance tried their hand at a variety of different field games the association has recently purchased, and others dug through their prize bag filled with goodies, courtesy of the event organizers.

The games, Blaskie said, will be available to families for a small donation if they would like to use them during their children’s birthday parties at the town’s recreation hall.
