The TCRA grounds in Ladysmith were bustling with people bundled up for the cold for a winter carnival organized by the Ladysmith Recreation Committee on Saturday.

The event featured a BBQ, kids’ games, a pick-up hockey game, a euchre tournament, and a chili cook-off featuring six entries. The Thorne Fire Department was also on site, offering s’mores and a chance to warm up beside a cozy fire.

Rec committee president Terri-Lyn Blaskie said it was the first carnival organized by the group, and said many people enjoyed the array of activities they had to offer.

After everyone’s votes were tallied, Fran Erfle’s entry (chili #5), took home the win. The euchre tournament, featuring 20 players, had three winners: Colette O’Malley, Viola Gautier, and Lory Beaudoin.

“This successful first carnival wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing volunteers who came out to help in the kitchen, run kids’ activities, and work the canteen,” Blaskie wrote in a post to social media after the event.

Blaskie said the money raised from the carnival will go toward hosting future events. She said the group is looking at doing an Easter egg hunt and pancake breakfast or brunch in the coming months.

“Most of our fundraising goes toward our kids’ activities, we like to have those available for free,” she said.

Lorraine Bretzlaff was one of the volunteers ladling one of six community-submitted chilis for guests to taste and vote on.
