Our sympathy to the family and friends of Rev. Fred Haak of Golden Lake, Ont. Pastor Haak was a retired Lutheran minister. He passed away in Pembroke Hospital on March 14 at the age of 79 years. Pastor Haak has been the Zion and St. John’s Lutheran Churches supply pastor for many years here in Ladysmith and Schwartz. Over the years he served at many churches in Ontario including Rankin, Pembroke and Arnprior.

Our sympathy to the family and friends of Rodger Laframboise who passed away last week in an Ottawa nursing home at the age of 89 years. Rodger and his late wife Joan had a cottage on Johnson Lake in Ladysmith for many years.

The Golden Age Club of Otter Lake had their potluck dinner last Thursday evening and what a variety of dishes there were. Afterwards we had cards, darts and the new game Pètanque Atout. Beulah and I played darts. The name game Pètanque Atout is on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
We just had a week of very cold weather, just when we were sure spring was here. This week it is supposed to get warmer. The first day of Spring is March 20 so maybe winter is finally over. But don’t put your snow shovels away just yet. This past Sunday night temperatures were a record low of minus 20 degrees below Celsius. Gerald and Winnifred were saying that it was negative 24 degrees Celsius Sunday morning and at Allison Corrigan’s it was negative 23 degrees Celsius. Allison was also saying that he keeps some records of the weather and that in Shawville on March 18, 1941 the temperature was minus 23.3 degrees and the record in 1966 on March 18 was a high of plus 16 degrees.
Happy birthday to Donna Zimmerling on March 21, to Jean Whelen on March 23, to Gary Bretzloff on March 24, to Lyse Lacourse also on March 24, to Norma Charette and Wayne Deering both on March 25, to Barney Richardson on March 26, to Bob Weatherall who celebrated March 16 and to Royce Hodgins who celebrated March 17.
Happy anniversary to Sally and Bill Keindel who celebrated their 40th on March 18.
Easter weekend this year is the end of March which is just a week and a half from now. Don’t forget the pancake supper on March 31 at the Zion Lutheran Church.
My sister Beulah Grife has gone back to Rankin this week. I’m going to miss her but she will be back soon.
My husband Tom is suffering from a pinched nerve in his back and is going for more x-rays this week. I am still going to the CLSC in Fort Colounge for the ulcer in my foot. It seems to be slow at healing.
Get well wishes to Norma Charette who hasn’t been too well last week. We wish her a speedy recovery.
On the wildlife report there are still a lot of deer coming out to the roads and also in the fields. There are reports of more being killed on the roads so be careful driving. A week ago when I was going to Fort Colounge there were some fields with at least 50 deer grazing in them.
If anyone has any news they would like to have put in my column please give me a call and I would be happy to write it for you. Call any time my phone number is 819-647-5304.
