SHAWVILLE June 9, 2018
With plenty of sunshine and hundreds of fish to catch, the Mill Dam Park saw quite the turnout on Saturday, for the annual youngster-oriented fishing derby.
As around 90 anglers turned out and six hours of fishing took place, the Municipality of Shawville’s Annual Fishing Derby saw a close race for first place, with the winner emerging within the last hour of the runtime.
Coming in first place was Cody Russett, who caught his whopper of an 11.5”, while Brynn Currie was not too far behind, trailing slightly with a catch measuring 11”.
Shawville Councillor Denzil Yach said the fishing derby has been an ongoing springtime event dating back around 20 years. All the young fishers could catch a maximum of three fish while spending their time at the river.
Every year, hundreds of fish, if not a couple thousand are released into the river, where kids will soon be casting their line in anticipation of hooking a few.
This time around, the amount of fish dumped into the river was about half than what is has traditionally been. Instead of the usual 1,500 – 2,000, the municipality dropped in 700.
Yach explained that the fishing derby has been supported by a grant, but that it was not received until late this year. Therefore, the amount of fish provided was decreased because the order had already been submitted.
