The Equity

Dear Editor,
I found the article about Chris Hayes and his Stanley Cup ring very interesting.
Although I’m two years older, we share several experiences. We both grew up in the 1950s and 1960s in small towns (Chapeau and Quyon) in the Pontiac and left when we were teens. Chris to play hockey and I to move to Ottawa after my father passed away. We both have university degrees which was not common for young people from the Pontiac at that time.
Where we differ is that Chris was a very, very proficient hockey player and I was below average in pond shinny. We also differ in that Chris still lives in Pontiac and I am established in Calgary with my only links there being my Equity subscription and visits to my parents’ resting place at Norway Bay when I go to Ottawa to see relatives.
I congratulate Chris on his career success and ring (and the Bruins for arranging it). I want to add one other note about a former Bruins player who only played one NHL game, in the playoffs in 1955. That player is Don Cherry who did not receive a ring because Detroit, not Boston, won the cup that year.
