The Shawville Figure Skating Club rolled out the red carpet on Friday evening for its final performance of the 2024-2025 season, themed “Skating through the Silver Screen.”
The evening featured 28 performances, each choreographed to the theme of a different movie, including everything from Annie to to High School Musical. There were solos, duets, trios, quartets and large group performances by the CanSkate groups and the Junior and Senior Stars.
Coach Haillee Hamelin-Dorzek, who’s in her fourteenth season of skating and started coaching in the fall, said that the idea for the theme started with a conversation with her co-coach, Marissa Lang.
“Marissa and I have been really wanting to do Disney on Ice as a theme, but we decided that there are so many movies that we really would love to skate to,” Hamelin-Dorzek said. “The theme came together with a red carpet and all the stars and costumes.”
Lang is in her eleventh season skating and received her CanSkate certification last summer. She said the coaching is her passion when it comes to figure skating.
“I used to do competitive and it wasn’t the route I wanted to go, so I chose coaching instead,” Lang said. “I fell in love with it, I love skating with the kids and it doesn’t feel like a job at this point.”
At Friday’s show, awards were handed out to a number of performers for their improvement and dedication to the sport.
One of those winners was Nora MacKechnie, 12, who took home the most improved award for the senior star group.
“At the start of the season, I was not doing any double or single rotations,” MacKechnie said. “Compared to the end of the season where I’m doing doubles and axels, I have gotten a lot better. I really felt proud.”
MacKechnie also helps out with some of the CanSkate groups as a program assistant. She said it was nice to see all their friends and family come out to pack the arena.
“I think that all the little kids got a lot better from the start of the year when some of them couldn’t even skate,” MacKechnie said. “Now, they’re pretty good skaters. It was nice to see them all come and try their best.”
The CanSkate most improved award went to Evelyn Tracy; the CanSkate champion awards to Shay Senack and Taylor Cross; the CanSkate “Mighty Might Award” to Odin Black; the CanSkate advanced most improved award to Mackenzie Drouin; the Junior most improved award to Layla Beardsley; the team spirit award to Anabelle Côté; the sportsmanship award to Gabrielle Keller; the most dedicated program assistant award to Morgan Tracy; the tenacity award to Vail Dubois; and the leadership award to Chloe Trudeau.
Both Lang and Hamelin-Dorzek said that getting to see the show come together made them emotional.
“I enjoy my skaters so much and I was so happy to see them pull everything together,” Hamelin-Dorzek said.
“I just felt really happy and it made me emotional.”
“It was breathtaking,” Lang said. “We were so proud of the skaters and how well they’ve done. They bring their enthusiasm and passion to the sport every day that they come and it all paid off.”

L’entraîneuse Haillee Hamelin-Dorzek, qui en est à sa quatorzième saison de patinage et a commencé à entraîner à l’automne, a déclaré que l’idée du thème est née d’une conversation avec sa co-entraîneuse, Marissa Lang.
« Marissa et moi voulions vraiment faire Disney on Ice comme thème, mais nous avons décidé qu’il y a tellement de films sur lesquels nous aimerions patiner », a dit Hamelin-Dorzek. « Le thème s’est concrétisé avec un tapis rouge, toutes les stars et les costumes. »
Lang en est à sa onzième saison de patinage et a reçu sa certification CanSkate l’été dernier. Elle a dit que l’entraînement est sa passion en matière de patinage artistique.
« Avant, je faisais de la compétition et ce n’était pas la voie que je voulais suivre, alors j’ai choisi l’entraînement à la place », a déclaré Lang. « Je suis tombée amoureuse de ça, j’adore patiner avec les enfants et ça ne me semble pas être un travail à ce stade. »
Lors du spectacle de vendredi, des prix ont été remis à plusieurs patineurs pour leur amélioration et leur dévouement au sport.
L’une de ces gagnantes était Nora MacKechnie, 12 ans, qui a remporté le prix de la meilleure amélioration pour le groupe des Senior Stars.
« Au début de la saison, je ne faisais aucune rotation double ou simple », a dit MacKechnie. « Comparé à la fin de la saison où je fais des doubles et des axels, je me suis beaucoup améliorée. Je me suis vraiment sentie fière. »
MacKechnie aide également certains groupes CanSkate en tant qu’assistante de programme. Elle a dit que c’était agréable de voir tous leurs amis et leur famille venir remplir l’aréna.
« Je pense que tous les petits se sont beaucoup améliorés depuis le début de l’année, alors que certains d’entre eux ne pouvaient même pas patiner », a déclaré MacKechnie. « Maintenant, ce sont de très bons patineurs. C’était agréable de les voir tous venir faire de leur mieux. »
Le prix CanSkate de la meilleure amélioration a été remis à Evelyn Tracy; les prix de champion CanSkate à Shay Senack et Taylor Cross; le prix CanSkate « Mighty Might » à Odin Black; le prix CanSkate avancé de la meilleure amélioration à Mackenzie Drouin; le prix Junior de la meilleure amélioration à Layla Beardsley; le prix de l’esprit d’équipe à Anabelle Côté; le prix de l’esprit sportif à Gabrielle Keller; le prix de l’assistante de programme la plus dévouée à Morgan Tracy; le prix de la ténacité à Vail Dubois; et le prix de leadership à Chloe Trudeau.
Lang et Hamelin-Dorzek ont toutes deux dit que de voir le spectacle prendre forme les avait émues.
« J’apprécie tellement mes patineurs et j’étais si heureuse de les voir tout assembler », a dit Hamelin-Dorzek.
« Je me suis juste sentie vraiment heureuse et ça m’a émue. »
« C’était à couper le souffle », a déclaré Lang. « Nous étions si fières des patineurs et de leur excellente performance. Ils apportent leur enthousiasme et leur passion au sport chaque jour où ils viennent, et tout cela a porté ses fruits. »
