Animal Aide Pontiac (AAP) held an euchre night last Friday, attracting over 40 card-playing sharks in support of the organization’s efforts.
Hosted at the Bryson Lion’s Hall, players both experienced and new to the game were welcomed out, enjoying the chance to play without the competitiveness of a tournament.
“This is our first [time hosting],” said Susan Belanger, the evening’s host and one of the organizers. “It’s not a tournament, just a euchre night.”
Though some people had a bit of trouble grasping the initial rules of the game, the matches moved quickly enough, especially after the first few rounds. Groups of four would play, and when the match was over, one team of two would move to the next table.
With 42 players out, there had to be one awkward table, but Belanger adjusted for this by having it work as a practice round.
Belanger has hosted and helped with euchre nights for seven years, running such events twice a week back in Oshawa.
Though small prizes and door prizes were available, all the evening’s fundraising went to support AAP. Players paid $10 to participate, and a 50/50 draw was also held.
AAP is a local, non-profit organization that assists with the education and costs of owning a pet. Promoting responsible pet ownership, rescuing stray animals and seeking homes for displaced domestic animals, AAP also helps with the costs of neutering and spaying.
“That’s one thing Animal Aide does, if they know you’re taking in pets, they’ll help you with costs for spaying, etc.,” said Belanger. “It helps keep the pet populations down.”
