Those looking forward to enjoying high-level hockey this upcoming season had the chance to come out and support the new team on Saturday, either by showing off their athletic prowess or just enjoying a few pints at the sidelines.
That’s because fundraising for the newly-formed Pontiac Senior Comets has revved up as anticipation builds, and a double sports tournament featuring ball hockey and softball kicked off the public events in support of the team.
“We have a baseball tournament every weekend here, so we wanted to do something different,” said Danick Boisvert, tournament organizer and Comets organizer.

Though registration for the tournament was slower than expected – Boisvert had to push some friends to organize teams – the turnout was proud, especially for the ball hockey.
“There was more excitement for hockey, people were cheering from the sidelines,” he said.
All taking place at Amyotte Park in Fort Coulonge, the morning was dominated by ball hockey before giving way to softball in the afternoon. Five teams competed in the round robin match-ups, with a home run derby breaking up the games into the evening.
In the end, The Outsiders, no strangers to the local baseball diamonds, cleaned up at the tournament.
Just as the softball was wrapping up, the party was only getting started as live music took over the park. BackTrack, consisting of André Boisvert and Francince Aubrey, would provide the night’s entertainment, playing late into the night for the Comets’ supporters.
Danick said the tournament was a great way of fundraising for the team, as there are many costs to getting it going. Everything from jerseys to league fees need to be covered, as well as help with travel costs and ice time.
The tournament was also used to begin selling season tickets for the Comets. Two tiers are available, with a general admission available for $60 or the VIP tickets, holding a specific seat all season long, for $100.
While they’ve received great support from local businesses there’s much work to do, and they figured why not use the opportunity to build excitement for the upcoming season.
“Events like this are for the community, supporting the team while everyone has fun,” he said.
