OTTER LAKE Dec. 16, 2017
The Otter Lake Golden Age Club held their annual Christmas supper on Saturday, filling the town’s recreation association’s hall with holiday cheer, music and laughter.
Starting at 6 p.m., members of the club and their guests descended on the hall, bearing gifts, buying up 50/50 tickets and bringing their alcoholic beverage of choice.
It’s a longstanding tradition of the club, one that the president could only assume that it’s been going on since before she joined. Though it’s changed over the years – performers have changed, dinner is now catered – the organizers and the attendees must still love it, because there was barely an empty seat by 6:30 p.m.
“It’s a social evening, so everyone can get together with members and their guests,” said club President Janet Lafleur.
While the club boasts 75 members, the attendance swelled to nearly double that evening.
“It’ll be 120, if everybody shows up,” said Lafleur.
Gifts piled up quickly under the hall’s Christmas tree, with the exchange working in an exciting fashion. Everyone that brought a gift, received a gift, and it would all be done at random, seeing as the presents were all wrapped so nicely. On top of this, there were door prizes to be won, donated by members and some provided by the club, too.
The group were excited to welcome back Bob Smith and his team, who catered the meal for them, helping to relieve a heavy burden from the club’s shoulders.
“This is the second year that we’ve done that,” said Lafleur. “It gives us a Christmas, too.”
Performing at the event was Conrad Denault, singing karaoke to some classic Christmas tunes and country crooners, with the help of Rosalie Denault Boucher.
Up next for the club is their annual St. Valentine’s dinner and dance, on Feb. 17, 2018, which is one of the few events of the year where they buy their alcohol onsite, acting as a great fundraiser for the yearly activities.
