Winter came through for one last hoorah on Sunday, just in time for the annual Campbell’s Bay winter carnival.
With full sun and temperatures hovering around -15 C, youngsters were abound at the town’s ice rink.
Pumped up on hot dogs, homemade chilli and s’mores, some were racing down the tobogganing hill, solo or as one amongst a pile of kids, some were playing a little shinny, and others yet were simply rolling around in the snow as if it was the last time they would ever see it.
This year’s event was funded by the municipality and organized by the Parent Hive, a relatively new group of parents who put on various kids activities throughout the year.
“We weren’t sure if we’d have the ice today, but it got cold last night,” said Kate Laporte, who organized the event along with Chanelle and Kellie Shea.
The day included activities such as an outdoor snow kitchen, a hockey shoot out, and several winter science experiments led by Chanelle. The chaos was calmed for at least 10 minutes, the children watching attentively as she demonstrated both a colourful snow volcano, created using an old pop bottle filled with baking soda and colourful vinegar, and a frozen bubble experiment.
Councillor Tim Ferrigan tended to the grill outside, keeping the hotdog supply well stocked, while Debbie Hirst and councillor Willy Rivet handed them out along with some home-cooked chili.
Chanelle said she believed the carnival to be one of the most attended to date.
The Parent Hive’s next event is a bike parade in May.
