Dear Editor,
Regarding Mr. Amos’ (MP for Pontiac) letter of April 18 on Bill C-71, this bill is another attack on responsible firearm owners, be they hunters or sport shooters. This legislation will have no impact on the criminal gangs using firearms as it is put forward and these gangs are the main problem.
I suggest everyone fully read this bill and form their own opinion, instead of Liberal talking points and check the stats on suicide and gun crime, the trend being basically unchanged over the years. Don’t cherry pick certain years that are an anomaly, to support your agenda.
Bill C-71 is the framework of a back door registry in this country, not to mention the federal Liberals agreeing to aid Quebec with federal LGR data to start up the current long gun registry in Quebec. The federal long gun registry wasted billions of dollars before it was dismantled, money better spent on mental health issues and families.
As for the RCMP “experts,” they have constantly made mistakes over the years, changed classes of firearms (some because they looked scary) and magazines, suddenly turning law abiding citizens into criminals. These bureaucrats should be enforcing the laws not making them.
With this bill the federal Liberals are prohibiting two families of long guns that have been legal in Canada for years, affecting thousands of owners who will eventually have to turn them into the police without financial compensation. Is that, fair Mr. Amos, to responsible law abiding firearms owners ?
