Dozens of hungry folks flocked to the Anglican Church hall in Shawville on Thursday evening for a barbeque chicken supper.
In addition to the succulent poultry being seared by several men from the congregation, the buffet table was filled with all kinds of entrees, desserts and the delicacy known as “Protestant salad”, all prepared and donated by members of the church.
Volunteer Dianne Judd explained that the event is a longstanding tradition at St. Paul’s and is one of their bigger fundraisers.
“I would say we started it sometime in the early 90s,” she said. “It was John Musgrove that got it going.”
She added that preparing the meal is a large-scale team effort.
“We ask the whole congregation if they can’t prepare food, to donate money towards the chicken,” she said. “Anybody that can help work comes and helps.”
Rev. Mavis Brownlee added that they also offer takeout options to those that can’t attend in person.
Judging by the smiling faces across the hall, no one in attendance would be in need of an evening snack.
