A private tour operator based in Gatineau is making significant investments in Mansfield-et-Pontefract’s Pont Blanc beach and campground, with the goal of making it a tourism hub for the region.
The beach, campground and axe-throwing venue are currently owned by Aventure Hélianthe, an outdoors co-operative run by brothers Guillaume and Olivier Lavoie-Harvey. They also offer lazy river expeditions on the Coulonge River, among other local wilderness adventures.
For several years Aventure Hélianthe has been collaborating with Brandon Bolduc, the owner of Gatineau-based Aventure Outaouais, to offer guests lazy river floats down the Coulonge River. Bolduc takes care of the marketing, and filling the raft trips, and the Aventure Hélianthe team offers the equipment, the put in on the Coulonge River, and a barbecue and axe throwing experience at the end of the day.
The Coulonge River adventure is just one in a handful of tours Bolduc has been running across the National Capital Region since forming Aventure Outaouais five years ago. He offers everything from haunted tours of the Pontiac to nocturnal snowshoeing tours in the Gatineau Park, as well as visits to breweries and wineries across the region. Most of these tours involve collecting people in Ottawa and Gatineau and transporting them to their destination for the day.
But next year Bolduc will begin renting the Aventure Hélianthe campground and running it as a home base for guests wanting to explore Pontiac’s wilderness.
He said the agreement, which will last five years with an option to renew, will see Aventure Hélianthe remain the owner of the land, but Bolduc’s company will operate services on the property.
“Having a hub on the 148 that people can come and adventure out to see different things around and really just become a hub of different activities, I think that will be really key,” he said.
Bolduc said his company will invest $300,000 into expanding and improving the Mansfield campground, including upgrades to the camping sites to include more services, as well as the creation of six glamping sites.
“It will give it a more welcoming feel, and the glamping will attract a different clientele.”
Other work will include improving the beach site, emphasizing that the beach area will remain public with no changes to access.
Guillaume Lavoie-Harvey said Bolduc’s ability to build and sell tours is just what the Aventure Hélianthe co-op needs right now.
“Nobody on the board is full time, it’s kind of like a side project for us where we try to give back to the community a bit. But nobody is really full out doing promotion and building packages and getting out there to get people to know about the site, so that’s where for us getting Brandon in was a great opportunity,” he said.
“It’s pretty cool because the co-op is all about cooperation between different businesses and whatever people’s strengths are.”
Lavoie-Harvey said the new collaboration will make it possible for Aventure Hélianthe team to focus on developing other offerings that have taken the back burner in recent years as they’ve poured their energy into running the beach site.
Bolduc said as a company looking to give experiences to people, he felt the next step was to invest in a physical location as a home base from which to help people explore the region.
“I’ve also felt like the next step in our journey as a guided company is to offer a location that people can come and do tours, and events and packages and stuff like that. We were looking for this kind of opportunity.”
