We were deeply saddened to learn that Susan Hamilton passed away on Aug. 4. Sue has been a big part of my life for many years, as a mentor, a friend, my best friend’s mom, and by extension, she was like a second mom to me. As a founder and builder of Mountainview Turf and Gemma Property Services, she was well known and respected in our community, and she will be dearly missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill, Jared, Lindsay, and all of Susan’s loved ones at this sad time.
Deepest sympathies are extended to the family of Gordie Mohr, as he passed away on Aug. 5. Born and raised in Beechgrove, Gordie looked after Mohr Cemetery for many years, and he was also passionate about the Beechgrove Rink. He will be deeply missed by this community. We are thinking of his wife Edith and all of Gordie’s family and friends.
I was also sorry to hear of the passing of Gervin Trudeau on Aug. 1. Gervin’s family asked me to share that a Celebration of Life will be held at the Quyon Legion on Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. There will be live music, and all are invited to come and share stories and memories of Gervin. Our condolences to Gervin’s loved ones.
On Saturday, a great crowd braved the heat to attend the Quyon Pastoral Charge’s “Blooms, Buildings, and Blocks” Tour. The tour featured the gardens of Elwyn Lang and Heather Barr, and Eric and Katharine Fletcher, as well as the Mohr House and the Egan Mill. Each location was lovely, and provided beauty, history, or both. We are grateful to Elwyn and Heather, Eric and Katharine, Jan Vuori and Liz and Rolf Wichman at the Mohr House, and Isabel Lajoie and Marc Bergeron at the Egan Mill for opening their spaces to us for this tour.
A Quilt Show was held at Quyon United Church as well, featuring many beautiful creations that covered generations, from the late 1800’s to present day. We were also fortunate to have the Quyon Centennial Quilt on display. Women in the community embroidered blocks with their names on them, and the quilt was assembled by Irene Clark, in honour of Quyon’s celebrations 50 years ago. A big thank you to Eddie and Dianne McCann for sharing the quilt with us for the day. The UCW ladies served delicious desserts and tea and coffee in the church basement, as well. It was a terrific celebration in honour of Quyon’s 150th Anniversary and the United Church of Canada’s 100th Anniversary, and it was a great success. Many thanks to all who came out to enjoy the tour.
Birthday wishes are going out to Raelynn Pape on Aug. 13, to Carmel Cote on the 15th, and to Troy Cote on the 16th. Happy birthday to Rylie McCann on the 17th, and to Wayne Hobbs on the 19th. Best wishes to all who are celebrating special occasions this week.
