Response to Welcome

The Equity

Dear Editor

I am writing in response to the letter entitled “Welcome to the Pontiac?” in the May 5 issue of THE EQUITY. The letter was addressed to the Warden and all mayors and councillors of the area. I am responding on behalf of everyone concerned.

I would like to begin by saying that I apologize that . . .

this incident happened in the MRC Pontiac. I am sorry that people could be targeted or judged by the provincial license plate that is on their vehicle. Seasonal residents are just as important as our permanent residents. Everyone who owns property, pays taxes. The MRC Pontiac has benefited from the fact that we have many properties owned by people from other regions such as Ontario. We also appreciate their support of local businesses and fundraising events. As a devitalized region in Quebec our slogan needs to be “Everyone is welcome to the Pontiac!” This is precisely why the MRC Pontiac with our mayors and municipalities are currently engaged in programs initiated through our economic development to attract investors and professionals. We have launched a website and with our plans for territorial marketing we want to welcome the world to the Pontiac.

The author of the letter, Darl Garlough, does not mention one important detail. Our current situation is that we are in the midst of a world pandemic. The Premiers of Quebec and Ontario have asked all residents in the two provinces to stay at home and not travel. In addition, the borders are being monitored by the OPP and SQ. This is the main reason for the heightened observance of license plates. Last year, when there was controlled access on the borders, we had zero cases of Covid–19 in the MRC Pontiac. I believe that this incident occurred at a time when Shawville and other municipalities were coping with many cases of the virus. Even if most of the transmission of the virus was through local community exposure, there is a perception that people bring it here from other places and this is why travel is being limited to be essential reasons only.

I would like to think that under normal circumstances, this exchange would not have happened. It is a warning though that moving forward, we all need to be more tolerant and accepting of others to ensure that the Pontiac returns to a warm and welcoming place.

On a final note, I would like share the great news that the Pontiac’s revitalization has begun and that we are in second place in the province of Quebec for real estate sales. It is an increase of 56%! Many people are discovering our beautiful wilderness region and are moving here. Covid-19 has given many people the desire to leave the cities. The revitalization of the Pontiac has begun and I hope that we can embrace our new residents!
