The Pontiac Senior Comets put up a touchdown and a field goal en route to a 10-6 win over the visiting Mont Laurier Montagnards . . .
on Saturday night at the Fort Coulonge arena.
While it was a slow start for the Comets, with Mont Laurier getting an early 2-0 lead, the team quickly snapped out of it and resumed its offensive domination.
By the end of the first period, the Comets put five pucks past Mont Laurier goaltender Jean-Samuel Giguère to make the score 5-2.
Matthew Warren led the way in the first with two of the Comet’s five goals.
The second period appeared to be going the same way with team captain Darcy Findlay potting an early goal just over a minute into the frame.
But Mont Laurier wasn’t going away quietly and responded with two goals of its own to make it a 6-4 Comets lead heading into the third period.
Another fast start to the period saw Comets leading scorer Justin Charbonneau pot two more quick goals to put the Comets up 8-4.
Both teams notched two more goals to make it a 10-6 final for the Comets.
The team has really hit its offensive stride in the last couple of weeks as the Comets have a whopping 24 goals in their last two games.
While fans were treated to plenty of action on the ice, the game served as a big event for off-ice news as well.
The Fort Coulonge Arena Committee announced that it is throwing its hat in the ring for this year’s edition of Kraft Hockeyville.
According to committee member Vicky Boisvert, there is plenty of work around the arena that needs to be done and the $250,000 top prize presents a chance for some much-needed upgrades.
Boisvert said that the arena needs heaters for the stands, as anyone who’s watched a full game inside the arene can attest to the frigid temperatures.
The arena isn’t currently wheelchair accessible and the committee wants to change that. On top of that, Boisvert said the washrooms could use an update along with some mechanical fixes as well.
While the charm of an old arena can tickle the heart strings of any hockey fan, there is plenty of work to be done, Boisvert said.
Another piece of machinery that the committee is looking to upgrade is the 1975 Zamboni that the arena staff does an admiral job with on the ice.
The Comets next home game is on Feb. 8 at the Fort Coulonge arena at 8 p.m.
