Quyon

Last Monday, the streets of Quyon and Bristol were glistening with Christmas decorations and several homeowners in the area invited the community to . . .
check out their decorative exploits during the 15th annual Quyon Home Tour.
Hosted by the Quyon Pastoral Charge, the event was an opportunity for local residents to share their Christmas spirit with the community at large, while supporting the local church.
According to one of the event’s organizers, Jillian Young, the event is a fundraiser for the local churches where local residents volunteer to decorate their homes and open their doors for the community to take a peek at them.
“We always ask them to decorate as they normally would,” she said. “Sometimes people go a bit beyond that, decorating every room in the house … we had one house this year that did just the main floor.”
Ever since being founded in 2004, the event has become quite popular in the town, said Young who noted that the church sold close to 150 tickets this year.
“That’s a very successful year for us,” she said.
At $10 per person, tickets gave access to all four homes on the tour, which included three stops in Quyon and another in Bristol.
Throughout the tour, a number of people stopped by the Quyon United Church, where volunteers served up snacks and refreshments along with tickets for a number of draws in the basement.
While the event has featured five stops in previous years, Young explained that because of the distance between stops on this year’s tour, organizers decided that a four-home tour would provide the best experience for participants.
“Because there was a bit of a drive from Bristol all the way to Quyon, we just kept it at four this year,” she said.
For Young, the event has become very special for Quyon residents because it’s something different than what many communities are doing at this time of year.
“It is pretty awesome that in a small area like Quyon and in the outskirts of Quyon that we’ve been able to keep it going this long,” she said.
As someone who loves Christmas, Young feels fortunate to be part of such unique event that she can share with her friends and family, while picking up some tricks of her own at the same time.
“Being able to go into people’s homes and see how they decorate, it’s inspiring for my own decorations,” she said. “I like getting ideas. Every year there’s something I haven’t seen before. After 15 years, that’s pretty remarkable.
All the funds raised from the tour will go back to the Quyon Pastoral Charge, Young said.
