On June 9, hundreds of Pontiac residents gathered outside the Shawville United Church for an afternoon of good food, drinks and local entertainment to celebrate 185 years of worship.

Hosted by members of the church, the event served as an opportunity for local members to congregate after Sunday service to celebrate the church’s history with a good old-fashioned barbecue lunch.

With three confirmations and two baptisms taking place at the church in the morning, the celebration was a great way to cap off an eventful day, according to one of the event’s main organizers, Sara Knox.

“It’s a great event,” she said. “It’s a Sunday afternoon that you can come have lunch with your family and go enjoy the day.”

During the event, attendees setup their chairs wherever they pleased. They indulged in the delicious delicacies and beverages available: a roasted pig provided by an Ottawa Valley based catering company, Hawthorne’s Custom Cuts and Catering, mashed potatoes with gravy, a large assortment of salads, among other treats.

In addition to the live music on hand, courtesy of a variety of local bands such as Thursday Morning and Abstract, anyone with a lick of musical ability was invited to take to the stage and show what they could do.

With such a huge crowd in attendance, Knox was very pleased with the turnout stating that tickets had been selling at an alarming rate in the week prior to the event.

All of the food and beverages were donated by a variety of local donors, including Joanne’s Valu-mart, the Municipality of Shawville and Terry Campbell.

All of the funds raised from the event will go back to the church, Knox confirmed.
