NORWAY BAY May 14, 2018
An early morning fire left a home in Norway Bay with extensive damage.
The fire broke out just before 5 a.m. on White Avenue.
Diane Delorme lives next to the home and was woken up by a neighbour, who told her the house next door was on fire.
“I opened the door and said ‘Oh my God,’” Delorme said.
She said the fire had jumped to a set of cedar hedges that separate her property and her neighbour’s and she was praying the wind didn’t pick up.
Firefighters arrived on scene just after 5 a.m. and extinguished the cedar hedges between the two properties first thing.
“Cedar goes up like matchsticks,” Delorme said.
Firefighters from the Shawville-Clarendon Fire Department as well as the Bristol Fire Department responded to the call.
Kluke said because the cause of the fire is unclear, and the odd way the structure burned, it’s under investigation by the Sûreté du Quebec.
“If it’s obvious, there’s no investigation,” Kluke said. “All we know is it started in the back.”
Kluke said the fire was under control by 6 a.m. and firefighters left by 9 a.m. However, firefighters had to return around 11 a.m. to keep an eye on a couple of hot spots in the structure.
