Two more candidates – Sherwin Greer and Aileen Sheppard – have entered the race for the vacant seat on Shawville’s municipal council after the untimely passing of long-time councillor Peggie Sheppard.
The two newcomers join former Shawville councillor Bill McCleary as the only three candidates in the race.
Sherwin Greer worked for the municipality of Clarendon for 21 years as a truck and grader operator.
He says the experience working in the municipal system has given him an idea of the day-to-day operations of a municipality. Greer said all that’s left to learn is the business side of it.
He says he decided to run because a new face on council is just what’s needed.

Greer served on the Shawville Fair Board for 25 years. He also served as President of the Kinsmen Club.
He says his ability to work well with others is one of his strongest assets. Greer also said that the fact that he knows everyone on council will help make the transition easier if he’s elected.
Although he hasn’t held elected office before, Greer said he’s keen to learn the ropes. He said it will take at least a couple of meeting before he gets into the swing of things.
Aileen, on the other hand, brings her years of experience as a wedding co-ordinator and event planner to the table.
She also ran the Sisters for Sisters fundraising campaign with her sister at the Royal Bank in Shawville for 12 years.
She said that her work ethic and her community spirit are two assets she hopes will get her a spot on council.
She said she’d like to see more beautification of Shawville’s main streets and wants to make that one of her priorities.
Aileen said that several people around town have encouraged her to run for the council seat, and she decided to take their advice.
Both candidates realize that there will be a learning curve associated with the new job, but are eager to get their feet wet.
The by-election takes place on June 10.
