Tiny rockers filled the Shawville Recreation Association on Saturday morning, when families came out for all sorts of zany, musical-themed and interactive entertainment.
Bopping and cheering along to classic tunes from Michael Jackson and other pop hits, kids enjoyed all sorts of high energy fun as they took in the show from Ottawa’s Junkyard Symphony, as organized by the Shawville chapter of The Parents’ Voice.
Running this show was Junkyard Symphony’s ‘Junkyard Jonny’ Olson and Mary ‘Landfill Lil’ Gellner, with the former interacting with the children while the latter worked the drums and all sorts of extra sound effects.
The show kicked off with Olson getting the crowd rowdy through a variety of gags, from dangling $10 bills over parents to riding a tiny bicycle around the kids.
Pretty soon, Olson was picking volunteers for guest spots in the show, having young ones like Roslyn McCann lead the group in cheers and dressing kids up in costume with props for dancing numbers.
With all the wackiness keeping the kids plenty entertained the event proved a success, as parents could bring their children home well worn out and The Parents’ Voice saw a great turnout.
Shelley Heaphy, a committee member of Shawville’s The Parents’ Voice, said that the Junkyard Symphony was brought in because it’s not a regular visitor to the area.
“We wanted to host this because it happens at all the schools [in the city],” said Heaphy. “We don’t have this here and we’d like to see more of it.
Heaphy continued to say that they had hosted the show in April 2016 and having a significant turnout at that show, the group felt confident that this one would prove to be another hit.
Going forward, the group looks to host more events like Saturday’s show, depending on what the community would be interested in seeing.
“We’d love to get ideas from parents of what to put on,” said Heaphy.
Next up for The Parents’ Voice is the start of their summertime Park Days on the morning of May 16, where local youngsters can make some friends at Mill Dam Park in Shawville.
