The Pontiac Home Bakery is hoping that the community rallies behind it and votes for it to become “Sweetest Bakery in Canada.”
The bakery has been churning out freshly-risen baked goods for more than 60 years.
Dan Duggan, the bakery’s owner, said it’s a good way to give the business a bit more exposure – not to mention the fact that he thinks it has the chops to top all others in Canada.
The Pontiac Home Bakery is just one of more than 40 bakeries in Quebec vying for the title.
Duggan initially got the idea from his supplier who suggested he should throw his hat into the ring.
Duggan first got into baking 11 years ago. Although he didn’t have a background in the culinary arts, he didn’t let that stop him. And if the steady flow of customers on a weekend morning is any indication, it’s a good thing.
Duggan said the bakery has changed since he first came on the scene.
“It’s changed over the years,” Duggan said. “We’re a lot more diverse than we’ve ever been. Over the years it was always the cinnamon donuts and the honey glazed donuts. Now we’ve just launched a new line of mini cheesecakes.”
Duggan said it was essential that the bakery update its selection with the times.
“It’s no longer your old-fashioned bakery where it’s just donuts, bread and buns,” Duggan said. “Now there’s something for everyone, there’s canolis, Portuguese traditional tarts, macaroons.”
Having a large amount of baked goods to produce means that Duggan, much like any other baker, has extremely early mornings in order to get the shelves stocked.
“There’s somebody in at 4 o’clock,” Duggan said of the early starts. “In the summer time it’s 3:30 in the morning, some mornings we’re there at two o’clock depending on how busy we are.”
Despite the early mornings, Duggan wouldn’t have it any other way.
“It’s something that you have to want to do,” he said. “You’re married to your business.”
The contest runs until July 31.
