Easter weekend was a great weekend for me because I had quite a few visitors. Thursday night, my cousin, Bob Mayhew from Oshawa, Ont. was the first to arrive. He stayed overnight but after breakfast the next day he went to see his mom, Betty Mayhew and her beau Gilbert Sparling in Otter Lake.
On Friday, my cousins Ramona Dunahee from Brinston, Ont. and Freda and Jacques Dupuis from Metcalf, Ont. arrived. We started playing cards after they unloaded their stuff and got settled in their rooms. We had a blast playing Petro and many other card games.
My Aunt Betty and Gilbert, and Bobby all came that evening for a scrumptious ham supper. Aunt Betty and Bobby share the same birthday which is April 2 but it landed on Monday so we decided to celebrate Bobby’s birthday on Friday at my place and then Betty’s birthday on Saturday at Gilbert’s home in Otter Lake.
Bobby really enjoyed his rocky road cheesecake and all the T-shirts we bought him for his birthday. We had a great evening sharing stories and catching up with each other.
The following day, we played a lot more cards until the afternoon and then we all went to Gilbert and Aunt Betty’s in Otter Lake for a wonderful roast beef supper. Our cousin Heather Boyd from the Picanoc and Bobby’s son, Troy LaJambre from Ottawa joined us so the house was full.
When Troy left Ottawa it was a very nice day and there was no snow so he came up with shorts on and flip flops on his feet. Before he got to Gilbert’s he decided to stop at the graveyard to say hello to his grandfather, Rudolph Mayhew. Little did he know that there would still be a lot of snow left in Otter Lake. As he got out of his car, he didn’t think the snow was that deep and proceeded to the headstone of his grandfather. Now he was committed and determined to get there no matter what. And so he did. He made it through, albeit a little colder but nevertheless none the wiser.
When he came in to Gilbert’s and did all his hugging and handshaking I looked down and saw blood and a cut on the back of his heel. He must have cut it on the snow. He said he didn’t even realize it because his feet were so darn cold. He’ll probably pack extra clothes next time he visits.
We brought out a birthday cake and celebrated aunt Betty’s birthday that evening and gave her her presents. She was very happy with all her company and family with her. Of course, we played more cards this time. We played pass the ace but we played many different variations. We all enjoyed a wonderful evening with Gilbert and Betty.
The next day Freda, Ramona and Jacques enjoyed breakfast with me but then they had to leave to spend Easter with their children. Bobby came back and we spent the afternoon over at Jen and Jean Guy’s playing cards.
I had to be at work Monday morning at 7 a.m. so I had to go to bed early but I really enjoyed my whole weekend with my family.
Unfortunately my grandchildren were not able to come but I did get to talk to them on Sunday and I had previously sent them an Easter card with some goodies in it.
Bobby’s girlfriend, Rachel was not able to come but she sent me an aloe vera plant in a pretty little pot holder, a beautiful set of pajamas and this sounds pretty strange but she sent me a jar of hazelnut spread for my birthday. Actually I used the hazelnut spread on Sunday morning’s waffles and then smothered the waffles with fresh assorted fruits, topped that with whip cream and a dusting of icing sugar. My cousin said it was like eating at Cora’s Restaurant.
Everyone is grumbling about this extra long, cold winter and me especially because I just ran out of wood. I am tired of looking at that white stuff. The robins are confused and their poor little feet are freezing because it turned cold after they returned. I wonder if the hummingbirds are going to get caught the same way because they usually come back around the middle of May. Even the geese seem confused.
There are still hundreds of deer yarding in between Vinton and Fort Coulonge so be very careful driving because they’re everywhere. Not only are there a lot of deer but there are a lot of wild turkeys too.
The dump hours have changed for the summer in Litchfield so the landfill site is now opened from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will stay like this till the fall. Still open on Thursdays and Sundays only.
My cousin Earl Mayhew has pneumonia and is trying to recover from that so here’s wishing you a speedy recovery.
I’d like to send happy birthday wishes to the following people: Chris Sauriol on April 11, Viola Hearty on April 12, Chanal Desjardins and Zoe Sloan on April 14, Dilon Kelly on April 16 and Richard Castonguay, Maureen Daniel and myself on April 17.
