It’s the time of year when many families spend a day off doing a quintessentially Canadian activity – visiting a sugar bush.
Maple syrup holds such a prominent place in our country that its seems there is a story each year about a multi-million dollar maple syrup heist. Not only is maple syrup delicious, apparently it’s pretty lucrative to sell.
Going into the bush and sampling some sweet, fresh maple syrup is a rite of passage for many Canadians.
Which is why Pontiac MP Will Amos is so surprised that Canada has never had a maple syrup-themed stamp.
“I just found out recently that there’s only been one Canada Post stamp that relates to maple syrup,” Amos said. “It was related to a sugar bush back in 2001 but there’s never actually been a maple syrup stamp.”
When this came to his attention, Amos saw an opportunity.
“I just thought to myself: that’s wrong, that’s got to change,” he said. “This is symbolic stuff.”
Amos said that since maple syrup plays such a huge role in the local economy, he’d be a good person to help lead the charge.
“Maple syrup is core to our Pontiac identity and it’s also core to Canada’s identity,” Amos said.
Stamps are approved by Canada Post’s National Stamp Advisory Committee. Stamp ideas are sent to the committee who then decides on which ones will be adopted.
Amos hopes that residents in the Pontiac will send their ideas to his constituency offices (postage is free) so that he can take them to the committee.
“I would love it if local teachers said ‘okay, today we’re going to be doing a fun activity,’” Amos said.
Residents have until April 14 to submit their ideas. Submissions can be sent to: Office of William Amos, House of Commons, Ottawa, ON, Canada, K1A 0A6.
