Congratulations to Danny Foran and Sue Sparling who were married on Saturday at the Jack Graham Community Centre in Bristol. Wishing the happy couple all the best.
A baby shower was held on Sunday, in honour of Emily McCann at the home of her sister Meagan. Emily and Kurt Fraser are expecting their first child, anticipating the arrival of their baby girl. Their loved ones showered them with beautiful gifts and good wishes. Good luck to Emily and Kurt as they prepare to welcome their little one.
There was plenty of winter fun happening in the Quyon area over the weekend and the weather was perfect for it. On Saturday, an ice fishing derby was held. It was so nice to see so many shacks and activity out on the frozen Ottawa River. Kudos to Chad Lapierre, Joe Belisle, and Bob Taylor for organizing the derby.
On Sunday, I was torn between two fun activities that were happening. I ended up taking part in the Old Sled Run, as friends Kerry-Lynn and Jeff Campbell convinced me to join them and their gang in parading over to the Legion in Constance Bay, Ont. I hadn’t been on a snowmobile in years and I had a great time out on the trails with them. We enjoyed breakfast at the Legion, then headed back across the river to Gavan’s Hotel where they parked the sleds for local enthusiasts to view them. It was a beautiful day and I had a great time.
Unfortunately, I missed out on going on the snowshoeing trip organized by The Friends of Chats Falls which was held on Sunday afternoon. They had a wonderful turn out for their guided tour of the once-bustling Pontiac Village (circa 1850’s) which is now lost or mostly hidden by nature. The group was able to experience the history of the Horse Railway constructed in 1847 to bypass the Chats Falls and they were able to walk on the old railbed with snowshoes in places which are inaccessible in summer. What a wonderful historical experience in our very own backyard.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Donald Davis who passed away in Timmins, Ont. on Feb.14 at the age of 90. He was born and raised in Quyon and though he moved away in the early 1950s Quyon was always dear to his heart. Our thoughts are with the Davis family at this sad time.
Birthday wishes are going out to Sarah (McKenny) and Ian Dagenais who share a birthday on Feb. 21. Happy birthday to Tanner Belland, turning six on Feb. 22 and to Isaac Côté who is turning two on Feb. 23. Birthday wishes are also going out to Sara Richardson on Feb. 24 and to Chris Young, Eleanor Foran, and Dryden Frobel all celebrating on Feb. 25. Blessings to all celebrating this week.
The Quyon Lions Club served up a delicious Pancake Supper at the Legion last Tuesday. It was a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the Mardi Gras tradition of feasting the night before Lent begins while getting to visit with friends and neighbours during the cold winter months. It was a terrific evening.
I have been enjoying watching the Winter Olympics from Pyeongchang in South Korea over the past week. Our Canadian athletes have been doing so well at the games. Many local folks were watching the women’s Skeleton competition with keen interest last week, rooting for Mirela “Mimi” Rahneva. Mimi is the daughter of Valentina Marinova, Ian MacKechnie’s partner who passed away last summer after a battle with cancer. Mimi ended up in 12th place after her four heats but she made her fans in the Pontiac very proud. Wishing all of our athletes all of the best in the final days of competition. Go Canada Go!
