Dear Editor,
For someone growing up in Quyon in the 1950s, the two publications my family depended on for news were the Ottawa Journal for world, national and sports (of most interest to me) news and THE EQUITY for local news of what was known at that time as the Pontiac.
For my last two years (1959 to 1961) at Onslow Intermediate School, I was the stringer for activities at the school. In very pre-internet and word processor days, my articles were filed as handwritten letters through First Class Royal Mail for five cents postage. Rosaleen and David (Mr. and Mrs. Dickson, of course) were the editors and were very generous in accepting my filed articles, almost always without change and they also gave me a byline. I was preparing for a career as a (sports) journalist, a career that lasted until I found a comparison between salaries for journalists and engineers (also an enjoyable and important career).

I don’t specifically remember meeting Rosaleen or David but I must have because I remember being at the office and being amazed by the printing press. I moved from Quyon in 1961 and came to Calgary, Alberta in 1981. I became a subscriber about 30 years ago and follow with interest “The Way We Were” and Jillian Young’s Quyon report. (Her father was one of the bigger/older boys at this time.) I was interested to see that Jillian reported Clayton Young had a birthday recently. I know which one it is because Clayton and I were classmates starting in Grade One with other children like Greta and George Poole, Sheila Draper and Glen McMillan.
I also follow the classified Death and In Memory notices with trepidation and concern that must arise with people of my age as we see the names of more and more of our contemporaries.
In closing, it’s good to see that Ross and Charles Dickson continue the good newspaper that their parents worked so hard to achieve.
