A teenager hit by a car while crossing Centre Street in Shawville on Friday afternoon was sent to hospital with only minor injuries, according to Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokesperson Sergeant Marc Tessier.
He confirmed the incident happened on Route 303, near Maple Street, and said the driver who hit the 16-year-old pedestrian may face infractions, but was unable to confirm any further details on Thanksgiving Monday.
According to THE EQUITY’s sources, the incident happened at the crosswalk where the PPJ crosses Centre Street around 3:30 p.m.
Police arrived on the scene and, soon after, an ambulance, which by 4 p.m. transported the pedestrian, a student at Pontiac High School, to a hospital in Gatineau.
“PHS was very appreciative of the prompt and professional care at the scene by the SQ, our faculty, the paramedics, and a local RN,” said PHS principal Dr. Terry Burns in a statement to THE EQUITY, noting he had received a “very positive report” on the health of the student.
“We look forward to obtaining and assessing more information from the official reports to ensure that our students are safe coming and going from school,” Dr. Burns concluded.
Shawville mayor Bill McCleary shared relief the student was not seriously injured.
“I’m glad she is okay and I wish that people would slow down and obey the traffic rules for crosswalks,” McCleary said.
THE EQUITY has not been able to confirm the circumstances that led to the accident, so does not know whether the car was obeying traffic rules or not. A follow-up story will be published once further details are obtained.
