Glenda Nitschke, librarian at the Quyon Library, had her hands full of books this weekend at the library’s annual book sale. All year long, books are donated to the library but not all of them make it to the shelves.

“If it’s too old, 15 years or older, or they’re in bad shape, we don’t put them on the shelf,” she said. “So we put them aside for our book sale.”

This year, Nitschke held the book sale right before the start of the school year in hopes that people would be back from summer holidays and in the spirit of reading.

The morning of the book sale, Nitschke’s grandson carried the boxes of books out to the picnic tables in the library’s yard where they were spread out for the community’s browsing.

“We decided to do a bag of books for $5,” she said. “So they can fill up a bag of books they want for five bucks. We’re hoping to be able to get rid of more books.”

Volunteers Susan and Mary Pritchard sold baked goods and raffle tickets all afternoon to raise money for the library’s year-round activities, which include an Easter egg hunt, a Halloween scavenger hunt, and Christmas gifts for kids in the community.

“The funds [raised] go towards the candies and gifts, as well as supplies for crafts,” Nitschke said.
Raffle prizes and home baked treats were donated by members of the community. Some of the raffle items included a handmade blanket, a spice basket, a cotton candy machine, a handmade bag, a gift card to Giant Tiger, and a pass for the Quyon ferry.

The draws for the raffle happened Monday and the combined fundraising efforts brought in over $500 to support the library’s events.
