Happy Canada Day. I hope everyone is enjoying a safe and happy holiday. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, we aren’t able to . . .
celebrate with the big community festivities that we normally would have.
The Quyon Canada Day Committee had to cancel the parade and fireworks normally held on June 30, understandably. However, I admire their perseverance to bring that spirit and Canadian pride our community is so well known for. They still put up the flags around town and due to the Quebec government’s relaxation of some of the rules they are also able to go ahead with a physically-distanced community barbecue, activities for the kids, and an outdoor Zumba class at the park by the new community centre. They will also be able to raise the giant flag at the pole down by the Quyon Ferry. I am so proud of the committee for finding a way to celebrate during this unprecedented time in our history. Well done.
Congratulations to Denis Renaud as he retired on June 19. Relax and enjoy this next journey in life Denis.
Last week marked the end of the school year for students of all ages in our area. It certainly wasn’t a normal school year, nor were there celebrations to mark reaching the end, but you should all be proud of yourselves for your achievements. Have a great summer and hopefully you will return to your classrooms with a degree of normalcy in the fall.
We were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of John Atkinson, better known to most of us as “Johnny K,” on June 23. I, like so many in our area, have great memories of good times with friends at his bar, Atko’s, in Shawville and everyone seems to have a favourite story or memory of Johnny K. He will always be a Pontiac legend and our prayers are with all of his loved ones at this sad time.
Deepest condolences are extended to the family of Gerald Miljour as he passed away on June 24. I worked with Gerald at Mountainview Turf for many years and my memories are of a kind, hard-working, dependable man who was well liked by all who knew him. Thoughts and prayers are with the Miljour family as they grieve.
Birthday wishes are going out to Ray Johnston, celebrating on July 1, to Daniel Dowe, turning eight on July 3, to Ian Hudson on July 5, to Alvin Johnston on July 6 and to Cooper Baker, turning two on July 7. Best wishes to everyone celebrating this week.
